Bio

Dr. Colin Brooks has over 30 years of experience in the application of remote sensing and GIS technologies to the modeling and understanding of environmental processes and transportation systems. He is now the Principal of the Geospatial Department at Nowak and Fraus Engineers in Pontiac, MI. His duties there include ensuring efficient lidar worfklows, providing geospatial services including web GIS solutions for local governments, and supporting all kinds of 3D field data collection. He was previously a Transportation Practice Area leader and Chief Research Scientist for the Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), a research center of Michigan Technological University. He was also a Principal Investigator for MTRI Inc., a small business startup focused on commercializing advanced remote sensing research of Michigan Tech, where he led development of the Crossing-i drone-enabled rail grade crossing inspection system. At MTRI, he led research projects on bridge condition assessment, unpaved road condition evaluation, mapping of invasive aquatic plants, bridge scour, infrastructure inspection with uncrewed aerial systems, slope stability assessment, power plant risk assessment, rail network modeling, and decision support systems. He has a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Michigan Technological University, a Master’s Degree in Environmental Management from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Forestry from Lenoir-Rhyne College.
