A graduated staff placed vertically on the bed of a stream or river to measure changes in the height of the surface, or to measure the height above a specified surface. Also called a river gage.

slope chaining

Measuring distance along a slope with a graduated tape which is held as nearly parallel to the ground as possible. The measured distance is reduced to horizontal distance by calculation, the slope of the tape or the difference in elevation of the ends of the tape being known.

(1) The directed line or distance from the origin of a polar or spherical coordinate system to a specified point. (2) A line drawn from the pericenter of an orbit to a point on that orbit. Also called a position vector. Note that the radius vector so defined is not a directed line.
