Jim Gillis was a land surveyor, photogrammetrist, and lidar professional, as well as a respected leader and advocate for advancing land surveying and the geospatial sciences in the United States and abroad. The Jim Gillis Memorial Education Fund honors his legacy by continuing his passion for the geospatial profession and his commitment to education and mentorship.
The primary goal of the fund is to provide cash awards that support education-related expenses, including conference attendance, training courses, workshops, and other professional development opportunities. The fund is intended to benefit students and emerging professionals in Louisiana and Texas.
The fund is sustained through proceeds from the Gulf South Region’s annual Geospatial Conference, along with public and private donations.
Award recipients and award amounts will be announced annually during the Geospatial Conference, beginning in 2027.
