Dr. Steinberg is the Geographic Information Officer (GIO) for Los Angeles County California, the largest county in the nation (by population) with nearly 10 million residents where he works across departments to develop and implement geospatial strategy with a team of highly skilled geospatial professionals.
Prior to joining Los Angeles County, he served as Principal Scientist and Department Head for Information Management and Analysis at the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project Authority, an environmental research agency in Orange County, California. From 1998-2011 he was a Professor of Geospatial Science at Cal Poly Humboldt, California where he introduced hundreds of students to the power of geospatial technologies and applications. During his tenure with the University, he was honored as a Fulbright Distinguished Chair in airborne remote sensing (Simon Fraser University, Canada; 2004) and a Fulbright Senior Scholar in geospatial analysis, (University of Helsinki, Finland; 2008).
Dr. Steinberg has researched and presented extensively on the application of spatial analysis and web-based systems for modeling and visualization of spatial data in both human and natural environments.
He is co-author of two GIS books with his wife, Dr. Sheila Lakshmi Steinberg:

- GIS for the Social Sciences: Investigating Space and Place (2005) Sage Publications
Additionally, Dr. Steinberg has published multiple book chapters, journal articles, and technical reports resulting from his work in geospatial science applications in both the natural and social sciences, including the co-editing, GIS Applications for Resilience: Across Spatial Geographies (2021) Esri Press.
